The Last Thread of our Constitution

Meridian Magazine recently released an article about the book “Our Lost Constitution” by Senator Mike Lee.  I found this article a good reminder of how little of our constitution we have left. In the article, he does refer to a prophecy by Joseph Smith. Perhaps he is referring to the following:

“You will see the constitution of the United States almost destroyed; it will hang by a thread, as it were, as fine as the finest silk fiber.”

This is an excerpt from The White Horse Prophecy. It isn’t the only time Joseph Smith spoke of this subject. Ezra Taft Benson reiterated this prophecy in his General Conference address of 1961. He said:

“Joseph Smith predicted that the time would come when the Constitution would hang, as it were, by a thread, and at that time this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction.”

Is our Constitution so far gone that it cannot be saved? Is there still one thread of freedom left to this people? Or does this refer to a time when the decision to continue using the constitution as the founding document of this country will be made by a single man?  A leader who can turn the tide of a nation, and restore the constitution to what our founders intended?

Brigham Young said, “Will the constitution be destroyed? No: it will be held inviolate by this people; and, as Joseph Smith said, “The time will come when the destiny of the nation will hang upon a single thread. At that critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction.” – Journal of Discourses, Volume 7, page 17.

Are you prepared to step forward when it counts the most?
