In my opinion, one of the most misunderstood prophecies is contained in the vision of Nephi, son of Lehi. He wrote the following:
And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth.
The reason this is so misunderstood is because many believe it speaks of the world as it is today. This is a tempting thought, because it gives people the moral high ground. “I belong to the church of the Lamb of God, so all other churches are the church of the devil.” Such thinking is critical, negative, and destructive.
Through my study of the many prophecies of the End Times, I have found this prophecy will not be fulfilled until after the great plague prophesied in Revelation 8. At that point in time there will be basically four churches in the world. The unified Christians, under the banner of the Pope, the unified Muslims, under the banner of Al-Mahdi, the Jews in Jerusalem, and the remainder of the world, gathered into the safety of the Rocky Mountains. After the plague, when the Dajjal is killed, the Christians will be convinced that they and the Muslims are of one faith. They will unify and turn against Israel. The Jews, for their part, will be supported and protected as much as possible, by a group sent from the safety of the Rockies. Thus the four churches become two.
Until that day, there will be many churches which have some of the truth and cannot be considered a church of the devil. There are a few churches who proclaim themselves as the church of the devil today. Even these are not unified into a single church. All things which are good come from God, and many churches do many good things. Let us judge each other by our fruits, and not by a misunderstood prophecy.
